Ringworm (Tinea Corporis)
Ringworm is a superficial fungal infection producing ring-shaped, scaly patches. It spreads through contact with infected people, animals, or surfaces.
Symptoms
Circular red, scaly patches with raised active borders and central clearing. Lesions may itch. Multiple patches develop if untreated.
Causes and risk
Dermatophyte fungi infect the outer skin layer. Spread via skin contact, contaminated items, or infected animals. Warm moist environments and contact sports increase risk.
How it is evaluated
Clinical diagnosis confirmed by KOH preparation showing fungal hyphae. We rule out nummular eczema and granuloma annulare.
Treatment
Topical antifungals (terbinafine, clotrimazole) for two to four weeks cure most cases. Extensive infection may require oral antifungals. Our Chicago team advises on preventing reinfection.
