Seborrheic Keratoses
Seborrheic keratoses are very common benign waxy, stuck-on, brown to black growths that increase with age. They have no malignant potential but can mimic melanoma.
Symptoms
Well-demarcated, waxy or velvety, tan to dark brown plaques that appear pasted onto the skin. They may itch when irritated.
Causes and risk
Strongly associated with aging and genetics. Sun exposure may contribute. Not caused by viral infection.
How it is evaluated
Clinical diagnosis based on stuck-on appearance. Dermoscopy distinguishes from melanoma. Biopsy when atypical.
Treatment
No treatment needed unless symptomatic or bothersome. Options include cryotherapy, curettage, and electrodesiccation in our Chicago office.
