Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra and can be caused by infection or irritation. It often overlaps with STI evaluation.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include burning with urination, discharge, irritation, or pelvic discomfort.

Causes and risk

Sexually transmitted infections are important causes, but irritation and other infections can also play a role.

How it is evaluated

We review symptoms, sexual exposure, urine testing, and STI testing when indicated.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics and partner treatment in some cases.
