Constipation

Constipation means bowel movements are less frequent, harder, or harder to pass than usual. It is common and often improves with a focused plan.

Symptoms

Symptoms include infrequent stools, straining, hard stools, bloating, and a sense of incomplete emptying.

Causes and risk

Low fiber intake, low fluid intake, medication effects, inactivity, thyroid disease, and pelvic floor issues can contribute.

How it is evaluated

We review bowel patterns, diet, medicines, weight loss, bleeding, and any alarm symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment may include fiber, fluids, activity, bowel habit changes, and medication when needed.
